How to get rid of algae and snails on plant?
What kind of plant dips do you need to get rid of algae and snails? I remember there is something that starts with a "p" put i can't remember. Also, where can I get the thing that starts as a "p"? Is their any other plant dips other than the one that starts with a "p"? Also, how do I use it?
Thanks -Jeff

Dunno about "p"
![]() Most peeps use a mild bleach solution... commonly 20:1 (20 parts water : 1 part bleach).

I think you're looking for potassium permanganate...
I've never used it so can't help more than that!

To get rid of snails is easy----go to a drug store and get a bottle of Amonium alum (it is an over-the-counter astringent). It can also be gotten from stores that sell pickling supplies. Place a couple of tablespoons in a half filled bucket of water and let the plant(s) soak for abut an hour. This will kill any snails or eggs. Rinse off the plant(s) and place in your aquarium.

I don't know about KMnO4 either. Not sure if it's readily available. Perhaps try a search on the Krib.

Jeff,
I'm going through the same thing in my tank, so as I find out more I'll let you know. Right now, I'm discussing the pros/cons of potassium permanganate vs alum for battling snails. Actually, you can hop to the discussion at Badmanstropicalfish.com. From the start page, click main. Follow that link to another link where it says "Message Board" (it's near the top of the page, about 4" down), click Messag Board. On the forums main page, scroll down until you see the General Discussion Forum. I think I called the post "How do you kill snails & improve water quality." You don't have to be a member to read the boards. I hope this helps & good luck!

I coudn't find any of the potassium permanganate or the alum. So I am going to use the bleach solution. I need it done by tonight so I guess I'm going with the bleach. Any suggestions/tips to make this sucessful dip? Will it also kill the algae with the snails? Also, is there a site where you can know how much gallons a container can hold by giving the length, width...?
Thanks -Jeff
