I won some grey goldfish at the fair

I went to my local fair the other day and thought I'd try to win a little goldfish and if it survived it would go in my 20 gallon with 2 fancies in it ( this tank is overfiltered, and has 2 plus inches of gravel for some plants and beneficial bacteria).

So I won the game, and I asked for a solid orange one if possible and instead I was given 5 grey goldfish. Right now they are in my newly dirted 10 gallon until I find a place to put the 3 or 4 I dont keep but my question is this....

I read somewhere that they are grey because they have had no exposure to uv light, and poor light in general their entire life so far but with proper lighting and conditions they will turn orange/gold in color over time....is this true?

Goldfish are born brownish or silver/gray. You are seeing this year's stock because of the shortage. There were massive die offs at the fish farms due to a big freeze. You are lucky you even found goldfish as they are scare in this area.

Also, coming from someone that had six goldfish in 20 gallon and killed them all to ammonia poisoning years ago, even one common goldfish is too big for a twenty gallon.
