Household Macro & Micronutrients

What household products do you guys use to dose your tanks. Right now I'm using spectracide stump remover for potassium nitrate, Fleet Saline Enema for phosphates, and Morton salt substitute for my potassium. For my micros I'm just using Flourish.

James planted tank has some nice information and a good dosing calculator.

When I first ordered dry ferts I had checked the store prices on the common stuff, and found it more expensive than real ferts. Fert prices are higher now, but I suspect the other stuff is higher now too.

Epsom Salts (MgSO4) are very cheap when purchased from a pharmacy.

Agricultural/industrial grade ferts are still cheap as dirt, with the exception of chelated iron compounds. The problem is that you end up with a 20 year supply.

For example, a 50 lb. bag of KNO3 is around $11-$15 if you shop around a little.

Whoa...I only dose about 1/8 teaspoon every other day. That 50lb bag will last me 256 years. How long will chemicals(KNO3, K2SO4, PCL) stay good for?

I bought my last fertilizers from http://www.aquariumfertilizer.com/ but you can also get them from Greenleaf Aquarium, which is a lot closer to you, so shipping time might be shorter. The prices are comparable at the two places.

If you keep your dry chemicals dry they will last a long time, perhaps the whole 256 years. They are a bit hygroscopic so try to keep the moisture out.

I keep my ferts in glass jars, with a few silica gel packets thrown in.
