I believe the copyright is only valid 20 years, second since you aren't selling the copies there is no violation. If that was the case teachers would have been fined a long time ago.

If that is right, would it not mean that this TFH article that was published in January 1975 (a little less then a year after TFH was created) is not copyright? I will email them and see what they say.

Copyrights can be renewed.

And teachers can get fined for breaking copyrights if they don't have permission to make those copies. Does not have to be for resale.

Many academic institutions actually buy permission to make copies (such as universities to put together excerpt/article packets for classes, etc)

I've been bugging TFH to digitialize old issues forever (they aren't available right now before Feb 2007 if I remember correctly) - you can always jump on that bandwagon and help try and bend their arms!

I think a legitimate teacher/professor that is reproducing materials for the specific purpose of using it in class is totally exempt from these kinds of things. My wife is allow to copy things, show movies, just about anything at her school.

I believe that since is was published in the US with a copyright notice at the time of publication the duration of the copyright is 95 years after the date of publication. The good news is you only about 59 years and you can copy it!

Thats ridiculous. You probably should have just copied it and not asked them at all. They wouldn't have actually done anything I would bet.

It isn't like they're loosing any business or anything, nor print backorders that old to my knowledge...
