Tips on equipment for 33 Gallon Long tank "48 long
Hi all! New here.... Been coming here alot but finally registered lol.
I got a 33 Gallon Long.. very excited to set up.. wonder if the equipment I should get should be different since the tank is so long....?It measures 48" long... hehe I have a aqua clear 20-30, and a random hob filter... for 20g tanks wonder if I use 2.. would be ok..? or to just get a new filter all together.. How should lighting be done.. the top.. has like a split on the frames for two hoods..? any recommended hoods? Growing low-med plants.. I am also running DIY co2... thru air lining and diffuser.. do I need two bottles for a tank so long? following 2wpg rule, dosing dry ferts.... any recomendations for a heater.. or should I use two small ones. so confused.. don't seem like alot of people have a tank like this one... Maybe use a powerhead for even flow in the tank... ty tips appreciated!! Posted on a few forums but looking for more feedback! |

Welcome to the site! Great tank, a 33 was my first saltwater tank a long time ago, wish I still had it! For a lighting reference Hoppy has a great chart here, 2nd one down. According to that and depending on what plants and CO2 you're doing 2 t-8's may be enough lighting, depending on how you mount them. You mentioned a few different ways to get good flow in the tank, multiple back filters or powerhead. I would chose a powerhead on one end of the tank shooting long ways, side to side. I haven't seen anyone using a koralia nano in a plant tank yet but I think they would work good in your "wide shallow" tank. They have good magnetic mounts and can move water nicely without making it seem to powerful coming out of a small output/nozzle. A canister may be nice also but that would cost a bit more than the koralia and make the back filter kinda useless. With good flow/circulation one heater should suffice.
Other thoughts, you didn't menion what substrate your using? I'd watch plant selection too. You mentioned DIY CO2, that and decent lighting may mean alot of growth/pruning/time/work/frustration. |

Hi Canadianbettas,
I will buy a 200w heater. I used 100w heater on a 30g breeder with not so good results. Canister filter and Koralia are 2 good suggestions by ckarr.

Did the tank come with the incandecent hoods? If it did i would just suggest going with the CFL 6500 bulbs in it that would put you at low light. I would definately 'if you are going with the HOB types" go with 2 one on either side of the tank for proper filtration. Also that should help with the circulation too. Cause if you just have a powerhead or korlia to push water might as well filter it too. For the DIY CO2 i run 1 2L bottle on a 7G tank so i would suggest go with at least a few bottles 2-3 to have the proper amount of CO2 in that size tank. DIY CO2 is hard IMO on larger tanks. Hope that gets you going in the right direction.
