Tsunami in South Asia

I have been trying to call my folks back home but can't seem to through ... I am also trying to get a flight back and there are no seats ... I am going crazy with worry

The news on the TV with images shown are not helping either.

Are there any people here with family/friends that were involved in the disaster?

i understand: i have friends in southeast vietnam, malaysia and jakarta. i haven't heard anything either. i know some people are able to text-message their people. mine are all in the rural areas and are pretty much unreachable (normally) except by post.
keep positive, and my thoughts are with you.

Oh sweetie, I'm so sorry to hear that. I hope you can get in touch with your family soon.

Hang in there Amber. It would be very easy to tell you not to worry, but that would just be impossible for you to do.

If it helps, take some solace in the fact that there are a huge bunch of people here at Planted Tank praying for you and your family and friends.

Mike

Thanks for all the prayers and thoughts; must have helped cos I got a flight going in; will celebrate New Year in the air; can't wait to get home to see if everything is all right.

I hate it when the lines don't get through. Been checking online, so far so good.

Well, thanks again for the well wishes and prayers, appreciate it greatly.

Cheers

Glad your call went through and you got confirmation on the wellbeing of your loved ones. I have been reading lots of reports from scuba divers that were over that way and it all depends at what are you are at in the region as to the level of destruction. Some areas that got hit such as Phucket, are still doing pretty decent and things are going ahead as normal. The real problem is going to be the water that is stagnant. Disease has the possibilities to spread severely in the next few weeks. Not a fun part of the world to be in over there right now. I also heard that in certain areas the reefs were tore up real bad. Nothing is confirmed as of yet anywhere, but expeditions are on the way in that region of the world as to the conditions of all the reefs. Many of those cities over there thrive and live off of tourism. If some of the reefs are damaged it will take approximately 15-20 years for them to rebuild. When you are spending $1000's of dollars on vacation to go diving in far and exotic locations, you make sure you pick ones that have great sites, not tore up reefs due to tsunami's, earthquake, and mother nature unleashing her shear power. That's enough to sink a town if your main dollar is tourism from scuba divers. Going to see many towns going under and having to relocate to other parts of the ocean/other sides/sites of the islands/land, etc. Not only has this tragic event taken many lives, it could completely turn some of these towns into complete ghost towns.. It will be like an Off-season for a shore-town for 20 years straight.

I have an uncle in Colombo, Sri Lanka that is safe and sound. He has some friends/family that he hasn't heard from yet, so we're praying for their safety.
