Question Don't start nothin won't be nothin...

So I was in my lfs and i asked if i could have a couple of snails to feed my son's green spotted puffer. He gave my a handful of malaysian trumpet snails for free. I've heard horror stories of them taking over a planted tank and especially tearing up the HC carpet. true/false? urban legend? i just wanna know before i put them in my new 60. tia
