Driftwood source on Oahu?
Hey all,
anyone know of a place to go hunt for wood? I'm mainly talking LFS, because I'm not sure if it's legal to go to say Maunawilli falls and look for wood along the way. (But if it is lemme know!) I know Aquascapes has some, but their pieces are $60 for not much (though they do look amazing) Thanks, Chris

pretty much all of the LFS have some; what kind of shapes are you looking for?

I thought something that looked like the roots of a tree coming down into the water would be good for a tall tank like mine. I'd prefer a really thick bramble of branches too to give the fishes plenty of hiding spots. I'll probably dedicate next Saturday to driving around looking for the perfect piece.

All of the stores in town and in the pearl city/aiea/salt lake area have petrified drift wood but I remember that it doesn't really get used any more cuz it changes hardness or something some of them also have wood that look like grape vines. So only options is manoa stream or country side where all the fresh water streams meet the ocean or aquascapes. One thing I learned was that when I tried to cut corners with hardscape I ended up hating it and spent the money for what I wanted anyway resulting in spending more money that should have What I usually do for wood is grab some smaller pieces that I want and then grab a big piece and make the shape I want and cover with moss/plants Good luck

Eh... Got a large pay check and went to Aquascapes for some aqua soil... Big mistake. Purchased two pieces. Updated my tank journal if you want to see em. $120... Ugh.
Beautiful though.

modern pet center has decent prices. Petland also has a pretty wide selection and is moderately priced. haven't really had a problem with either. just a lot of tannins but that goes away after a few weeks. i've also bought from aquascapes but their stuff seems a bit overpriced.

Guava wood you can find in some stream beds and various places there is suitable, sort like Manzanita. I've seen it all over the place on the north and up in the Manoa valley. It's a weedy, non native and one of the worst weeds you have on the island.
