I had completely forgotten about kronos quartet. Lately I need some different music for our 3 month old daughter to nap with. Lately the tecno trance (love that dishnetwork music selsction) has worked but she will need different tunes from time to time.

This is a very interesting thread. I think Philip Glass is an excellent choice. I would choose music that matches the "other-worldly-ness" of the fish tank, kind of spacey, minimalist, serene. Jazz would work, classical guitar. Gregorian chant? Maybe not. John Philip Sousa... er, ... no.

Here is my reason why.

The minimalists use a lot of repetition in their work. A lot. The repetitive nature of the music reminds me of the constant, repetitive motion of the fish's fin movement, as well as their breathing. it kind of syncs up. The minimalists music is repetitive, but it does move on with a melody. the melody would be the actual motion of the fish through the water as they carry on the routine of their lives.

Make sense? I would be willing to send an MP3 to anyone willing to give it a try!

Mike

Man I have never heard of any of these people... I have to get out more. Is it me or did they remove that music they used to play over at the ADG site...I would set the volume just right and lose myself in the tanks...but now the music dont play. (?)
Sounds like the same principle as they had with the repetitive type music... I loved it ! Now that type of music playing would be much better then the usual silence...not to mention it would be nice to play when we have guests.

I'll have to take a look at some of these ... If you were to buy one today...which CD would you get ? Artist / Title please, like I said ...never heard any of them before... LOL

I've never been a huge Glass fan (please don't hit me, Momo).

I would be inclined to recommend Michael Nyman. My current favourite is the soundtrack from The Claim, but he also did (and more people will be familiar with) the soundtrack to The Piano.

Don't feel bad, Buck. I've never heard of many of these, either.
If I were to relax and listen to something while viewing my charges, the nod would probably have to go to Josh Groban just for his sheer incredible vocal talent.

Robert Michaels, Jessie Cook, Josh Groban, Charlotte Church, and some classical and opera will all do . . . except the theme of Jaws intrudes in my head when I see my dwarf puffer sneaking up on a snail.

I listened to some Michael Nyman, but didn't like it much. Can't really put my finger on it, but I just didn't like it.

I like Adams better than Glass. Always have.

I could send an MP3 to you if you would like, Buck. Won't cost you a thing either!

A little off topic: Anyone else like the Bela Fleck/ Victor Wooten version of the Beatles "Norwegian Wood". It is one of those songs I just keep going back to, and I have been into it for quite a while now!

Aside from dead silence, I like the sounds of a crackling fire while viewing my tanks.

You could also check them out on either Amazon.com or the iTunes music store -- both places will let you preview the music, so you can see what you like. I'm sure other sites offer the same, but those are the two I always check out.
