DIY co2 affecting fish behavior?
First off, this is an excerpt from my tank journal. Figured I might as well post this in the DIY threads. Thanks to all of you!
![]() ok, so I hooked up my DIY co2. I am distributing through an airstone (i know this is the weakest way to dissolve it) that is situated directly under the intake of my filter. Before the co2 started, my guppies and shrimp were quite lethargic. Since it has been running however, they have become much more active, exploring all over the tank instead of hiding under the filter or by the heater. I was wondering if their behavior was changing due to an adverse affect of the co2. (diy from a 2 litre bottle). Is there any danger of too much co2 in my 20 gallon from this setup? Any help would be great thx.

It is unlikely that a single 2 L pop bottle DIY CO2 will generate enough CO2 to adversely affect your fish.

Your guppies will go to the top and suck air when the co2 starts getting real high...

Ok, I just wanted to make sure the behavior change was a coincidence and not something serious. thank you

I would think the opposite, it is good: the little extra CO2 was just what the plants needed, so they are raising the oxygen level in the water. Probably not pearling, but adding enough O2 that the fish are happier.

What was your pH before the CO2 was added? Perhaps having the CO2 helped to lower the pH to a range that was more optimal for the fishes/shrimps?

Ya, I was having trouble with my water having a high ph until I added the co2. That's gotta be the reason for the activity increase. Thanks!

I think that if I had a 20G, I would add at least another bottle.

ya, i was thinking I would, prbly nxt time I have to replace the mixture, that way I dont have to replace them at individual times. or, I could find a better way to distribute the one I already have

funny thing is my drop checker is always light yellow-green and all i have is the hagen canister changed weekly fed directly into my intake. I just ran the airline tubing down to the intake guard, cut it on an angle, so as it starts to bubble out the suction of my xp1 pulls it in. My tank is about 29 gallons
