Default DIY needlewheel for Hagen Mini-elite?

Hey guys, Im using a mini-elite to chop up and distribute my DIY co2 around the tank...it really looks like its doing a good job to me. BUT after reading about EI dosing, it appears theres a lot of emphasis put on CO2 levels being the next weakest link once all of the nutrients are taken care of...so...I want to try to make the mini-elite even more elite.

I was wondering if I were to remove the impeller from it and cut a couple slots vertically down each impeller blade with a coping saw or something would work? Would it still have the ability to move water like a powerhead? Or are needlewheels only good for chopping up and not movement of water.

Thanks for any tips. I guess I could just go buy another one for 10 bucks if I were to ruin the impeller..
