Anyone use the ViaAqua series. I found these, and they're pretty cheap...yet they seem decent?! Does anyone know what they rank as, better than a FilStar? Top or bottom mounted impellers?

There was a shop in my local area that got them in got almost everyone back. They have top mounted impellers. And I'm really surprised that you want to save a few bucks.

Do you mean people were unhappy with them? Is there any particular reason? Are they better than Fluvals?

People were very unhappy with them. Noisy, poor construction, breakage. Never used a Fluval myself. I'm a Rena pimp.

I'm a Rena pimp too, but I really want to find a cheap canister filteration system for future use. How are the Penn Plax Cascade systems? :?

I don't think saving $10-$20 on a cannister filter is going to save you money in the long run.

I have the Via Aqua 750 running on my tank since Thanksgiving. I have an Eheim 2026 Pro II on my 29G. The Via Aqua 750 is more quieter then the Eheim! But the Via Aqua is laying on the carpet, while the Eheim is laying on the wood flooring of my 29G. I like the attachments of the Via Aqua much better. You can twist the ViaAqua return part to position the spray back on the back of the tank instead of being on the side of the tank like the Eheim. I haven't noticed any poor construction problems on the Via Aqua, would someone point them out to me? The instruction on the Via Aqua is lacking. I have a return part(looks to be an oscillating return/venturi kit) that I have no ideas how to attach or use.

Ive never bothered to use anything other than fluval.
I have used at least 5 different ones over my lifetime...
I have never had one break down on me.. always sold them with the tank.
I never heard a single noise.. In fact I can open up the cabinet under the aquarium and stick my head in and still not hear a noise. If I touch the top near the impeller I can feel a slight vibration... other than that and the fact that water is flowing from the exit tube, You couldnt tell the fluvals are on at all.

Note: This is just MY experience. You dont have to agree with it... but no need to flame me for having good luck with fluvals

No flaming should be necessary, Tres. Fluvals are definitely reliable. With few exceptions, most live very long, quiet lives. Their design recieved a much-needed improvement with the -04 series and are now much easier to prime (which was their biggest downside, previously). My Fluval 203 is stillr unning after 12 years of use!
