Default Cichlid People

I recently made a craigslist purchase with the deal came two different cichilids. One is a peacock cichlid and the other is a cobalt cichlid. The cobalt is mean as hell. I have them both in a tank of there own as they were sharing a 20 gallon with 15 other fish. Im trying to figure out how to sex these. Ive never been a into cichlids but i have to say these two are beautiful. the colors are amazing but im thinking im gonna have to give the cobalt its own tank as it rules the 20 gallon with an iron mouth..... very mean. So im trying to figure out how to determine sex as i would like to purchase the opposite sex for them and give them each a mate.

Also, the peacock seems non-agressive. WOuld it be ok in my community tank which has amano shrimp and neons or should i set up a 10 gallon?

Any advice and or links would be greatly appreciated. I can post pictures later on if needed. Thanks

Anything under 55 gallons is tooo small for either of those fish. Don't put the peacock in with shrimp. It will eat them in no time. Both of those are better suited in a species only tank and should be kept with a bunch of similar african species. Too small of a group and they will tear eachother apart.

Can't help with the sexing.

Any decent LFS will gladly take them as donations. As thelub said, they need bigger tanks, and as pretty as they are, you probably don't want them in your community tank.

If by cobalt you mean http://www.tropicalfishandaquariums....CobaltBlue.asp

Then I suggest you get rid of him unless you intending to start up an African Cichlid tank.

Peacock is about the same and needs it's own species tank or in with other Africans as well.

You should do some research before buying fish online or through CL it might save you money or time or both.

Thanks for the condescending advice imi statue, i dont owe an explanation but ill give one anyways. I was buying the tank the filter the hood the light and a few other pieces of equipment. I had to take the fish with the deal. So considering i paid $30 for the whole lot it was a hard bargain to pass up. Snide comments are always the best. Be helpful, dont be a dick

Sorry if this came across as a put down, but in my 45 years of experience in this hobby I have met many people who have "bought" fish they knew nothing about and the fish were the ones who took the punishment.

And no you don't owe any explanation and thanks for being direct.

Peacocks are relatively easy to sex once they color up, as only males will be nicely colored, females are a silvery grey. Very few species of peacocks females will have any type of color than that.

For the cobalt blues, only way to sex them is to anal vent them, as their morphic, heres a species profile for them: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profile...ies.php?id=787

And as others have stated they both need to be in a 48" length tank as minimum. Peacocks probable won't color up with a cobalt in their midst as the cobalt is much more aggressive than any peacock. You need to keep peacocks with other peacocks, and the cobalts with other aggresive mbuna type cichlids.
