Default My Nessie project

I thought I'd share some pictures of one of my neo heteropoda shrimp projects that's been breeding for a couple years now. Before anyone asks, It's not a hybrid. LOL

I call this strain I'm creating "Nessie"

I've gotten them to breed 80-90% true now, so my biggest challenge in front of me is breeding the higher quality like my shrimp in the pic above.

Here's a good pic showing the difference between my higher quality and lower quality. On the right you see the lower quality all have green painted hoods, however the green hasn't filled in the body very well. On the left is a nicer one with the green painted better on the body.

The green itself is dark on the shell, almost opaque. It appears more translucent with flash.

I'm breeding toward the total painted body look. However, I'm a little nervous that if the whole body is covered- it's going to appear so dark that the green maybe hard to see except in flash photography.

I'm currently cycling a 2.5 betta bow to take my top quality and breed them together in an attempt to help solidify higher quality painted bodies.

So, hopefully within a year or so, I'll have refined my Nessies.

These are cool! Did these come from wild coloration? When did the green color first pop up?

Believe it or not, it originally came from fire reds! Crazy, huh? The wilds I have seen don't look like mine, so I don't think so. Although the bars do seem to be more of a wild trait (for humans and shrimp. LOL)

Been working on this for about 2 years now. At the moment I get maybe 5% higher grades. Am trying to improve that now.

I decided to reverse my idea of the 2.5g, and instead am cycling a 10g to move all the lower grades to. That way I don't have to wait for my higher grades to get used to new params- or worse- some unforeseen tragedy to happen to the ones I really want to work with.

Tran, Betta, Night, Ren, Alpha- thanks! I must admit that I had some motivation along the way, because green is my favorite color. I love the look of the hulk shrimp, so now maybe we'll have that in neos when I can have the higher grades being thrown consistently!

I like green shrimp too, but these are some of the coolest I've seen (love hulks, boy do I hope to get a few of those out of my BKK!).

Very very nice!!! Call them riddlers lol. They're green and people will have no clue where they came from when you get them breeding true .

But about the separation.. If you keep a detailed log, you'll probably find some low grades carrying genes for high grades. Try to keep an eye on who breeds with who.

If you can get a sump type deal on the side of the tank with the same water, hatch females in there. You'll know exactly which shrimp gave what offspring.

I know what you are saying, and you are correct. However I have over a hundred shrimp in there, and for me to know who bred with who and keep track of every female and their offspring would be a humungous effort.

HOB breeder boxes aren't quite secure enough to keep shrimplets from getting back in to the main tank. I've even had guppy fry make it through the grate, and any time I put foam there it just makes the return weir overflow down the back of the tank. They can keep juvy/adults out of the flow but babies are very very tricksy.

I covered the main exit and the overflow with a bit of filter floss after one of my BKK escaped into the main tank. Worked perfectly.

I keep thinking about supergluing some stainless mesh across the opening, but filter floss sounds interesting.
