is this a good idea? i read somewhere before that reef bulbs are best for growing mass amounts of algae.

i bought 2 light fixtures and they came with some reef and coral growing bulbs. should i switch?

i believe they are 8000k+

considering they are blue.

thanks

If you read that they produce mass amounts of algae, maybe you should not use them in a planted tank!!! But there are many other factors that will contribute to algae blooms like an imbalance in nutrients.

I think that the best ones for me are some T-8 flourecents in the 5500K to 6500K range. That is what I use and have not any algae problems.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that reef bulbs are best for growing mass amounts of algae. They may not be optimal for plant growth, but reef bulbs can definitely be used to grow plants.

You have to realize that plants aren't nearly as picky about the "color" of the light as they are about the intensity. As long as you're in the 5000K-9500K region, you've got a good plant bulb. Choosing color will all come down to personal preference.

I have learned from a very painfull algae experience that although I love the colour of 18000k bulbs, and actinic bulbs, they certainly do encourage algae in "certain" configurations. In my low light (under 2wpg) tanks I have 18000k bulbs with no problem, but in tanks that are high light, or tall tanks (over 2 feet tall) then I seem to have horrendous problems with staghorn algae or diatoms.

I recently tested this theory by using different bulbs over the 90 gallon tank. The results were simply astounding. Under the 18000K + Actinic bulb was a stripe of Staghorn algae. It didnt grow anywhere else, just under these bulbs. The rest of the bulbs ranged from 2700k-5000k and had no problems at all!
