Hello new to the Pacific Northwest. Move out here in May. Setting up a 75 tall and looking for some good shops to get plants from. SA cichlid tank, looking for some amazon swords and tall Cryps or Unusual Vals for the back round. Went out and picked up some awesome driftwood from a local area (Fresh Water). Will get some pics when I get it cleaned and tank ready.

These pants? are fancy.

I suggest you visit pet-pourri in everett, they have an awesome selection of fish and a decent selection of plants. That would be the closest one to you that is a decent shop. There's also jones pets in marysville, but they pale in comparison.
Also, they have live blackworms, which I can vouch for... If you have fish you want to breed, get 2 portions of black worms, and feed it to your fish for a week, you'll have breeding in no time... They're like viagra. |

A bit of a drive, but check out "the fish store" on Roosevelt avenue in Seattle. Sierra fish and pets in Renton had a decent selection of plants as well...

Hi orangelss,
If you are looking for plants (including some of the more unusual ones) and SA cichlids The Fish Store on Roosevelt in Seattle is probably the best. At lot of GSAS members bring in some of their surplus plants / fish to The Fish Store. BTW, GSAS has a lot of 'plant people' and SA Cichlid folk (ACA members). We have had Tom Barr, Karen Randall, Dick Au, Ad Konings and may other nationally known speakers in the last two years. Next September......Christel Kasselmann!! Interested....visit GSAS.org! 30 Gallon

I wish I could go to some of the meetings, but I work swing right now. Thanks for the heads up everyone. Going to put my substrate, rock work and driftwood in this weekend. Would anyone be willing to donate some used filter media to help kick start my tank?

Hi orangelss,
I live in the Renton area, down by the airport...a little far to go for some beneficial bacteria! We do have a lot of members in the north end like Woodinville and Marysville. The best way to reach them would be on 'airstone' the GSAS e-mail chat. Anyone can sign up and use it. The GSAS.org website under the 'Community' tab is how you sign up. Where did you move from? If you aren't from this area the water parameters may be a surprise when you start testing them. If you are looking for any specific plant or fish species let me know and I will see if I can help. -Roy

I'm originaly from central Missouri. Everything there ran through lime stone and was extreamly hard. CLR (Calcium/Lime/rust remover) stock was highly regarded in that area.
As for fish I am a huge fan of Saouth American cichlids. I used to have 20 discus breeding pairs, several different apistos, geophagus, and severums. I have been by Macs Discus in Woodenville (about 20min away) and talked water and such with him. I do alot of rainwater collecting and also were on a well up above Monroe close to the national forest area.Have not checked the water here yet. Going to bring a sample in when I go get more substrate this weekend. See what they say about it. Last edited by orangelss; 12-23-2011 at 08:37 PM.. |

Hi orangelss,
I grew up in St. Louis, my wife was born there and she still has family back there. Welcome to the Northwest!

Hi orangelss,
Refilled or exchanged? There are a lot more places that do an exchange, some places will refill your tank but it may be a couple of days B/4 you get your tank back. Try Central Welding Supply in Everett; a lot of GSAS members use AAA Fire and Safety on 3rd Ave. N in Seattle (a few blocks from our meeting location).

Thanks, I'm getting a alum 10gallon tank. Would prefer to get it back instead of a steel one.
