Air Pockets in substrate

Hello All,

I'm new to the forums and planted fish tanks. I have set up a 10G tank for growing plants in my garage. It has been running for a little under 24 hrs. I have about 2 inches of organic potting soil and an inch of play sand over the top. I'm using 2 14 watt cfl bulbs for lighting.

Well, I noticed that there are a lot of little bubbles in the sand and soil. I wet the soil and sand before I added water and I patted it down pretty good as well. The water is pretty clear too.

Are these bubbles bad?

and if so what should I do about them?

Also I added the description of my 10G if anyone had any advice for that.

Thanks for any help and advice!

Air pockets is not a great thing but its also not the end of the world. Poking the substrate periodically is pretty much the only way to release the air. Avoid lateral movement, poke it. Try to remember to poke it at least at water changes. As stated above it will settle. As settling occurs, you will have to do this less and less.
