My question:
If you were starting from scratch with supps and foods (which I am) and money was no object (even though it always is), what foods and supps would you choose to buy?
I would like to figure out a complementary and comprehensive program for them. I do feed fresh, organic kale and spinach as well.
Looking at Ebi-ken, Mosura, BorneoWild, and Shirakura... It does not have to be all from the same product line, but would rather not have too many overlapping products.
I have a hard time figuring out what to use with other products, how to cover all my bases and have the healthiest shrimp possible, but not use too many and overfeed/supplement....
Shirakura Ca+ for remineralizing RO water.
BorneoWild supplements like Stout and Whiteness
Jake's (somewhatshocked) different foods like his veggie sticks and others.
After all the products I have bought so far, Mosura CRS specialty shrimp food is an all around staple food for caridina. Everything else feels/seems like treats.
White shrimp products really need to be used on babies if you want to see results. You can see some results on adults but you can't really fix everything that causes poor whites (genetics, poor water quality, stressed shrimp, etc)
I would HIGHLY recommend samples first. I have probably over 30 high end shrimp foods here and some of it, they just don't touch. Not every shrimp has the same tastes. What my shrimp love someone else's shrimp might hate. Likewise I have certain tanks of shrimp that won't eat certain foods that others love in my other tanks. There is zero sense in spending tons of money on stuff they don't eat. Furthermore a lot of these products don't have preservatives in them....which means you've got 4-6 months from time of opening...maaaybbee a year if you keep it in the freezer or refrigerator. So yeah even though the amount I have would last years if it had preservatives in it, the sad thing is most of it won't. This is why I have so many RAOKs, I'd rather it be used than go bad or go to waste And since you only feed a small amount a few times a week even a sample can last you over a month.
I know and it stinks. Some will say 'use within 4 months after opening'...sometimes you even get manufactured by dates. Really crappy label 'procedures' if you ask me.
That's why I started sample sizes.
Give people a chance to try all these foods without purchasing full bottles and then having your shrimps turn it down.
The only thing that had an issue was Borneo Wild Vigor. It's because of a miscommunication between supplier to the consumer. People had their vigor moldy because no one inform them that it was supposed to be kept refrigerated.
Other than that, my Mosura CRS Specialty food is one year and few months old and the CRS still eat it. Although I notice the amount of time it takes for the shrimps to swarm the food.
Not my intention to derail this thread but I supplement, as best as I can, with homemade side products.
My Amanos go crazy for dried/dead BBA and dried duckweed. I collect the BBA/duckweed in a fish live food feeder (the floating one used for tubifex worms), let it dry out than let it float in the shrimp tank. Amanos draw the knives on each other when I do this.
I've used a lot of the available, what I'll keep using for sure (the bare minimum)
- Salty shrimp GH+ for remineraling
- RO for WC and Top off
- BW Bebi for babies and adults alike
- BW Vigor for food supplement
That's it. I'm also using Prodibio Bio Digest now. It's very popular in Taiwanese shrimp keeping. Not cheap but I see the difference it makes and I like it. It's not necessary though.
I don't sell this stuff, so I don't feel too guilty talking about it. It helps when setting up new tanks, and I use one vial for 5 tanks (like 60G in total) every 2 to 3 weeks. I see some difference in shrimps but most importantly, the empty vial looks cool in the tank lol
