Well, I guess I'm in for the long haul now. I just got the reverse-flow part for my Penguin 550 powerhead and attached a gravel tube to it with the whole sponge-bioball contraption. The CO2 is being tossed around and smashed into nothing!! No noticeable drop in pH yet, but I anticipate it will probably overnight.
Any suggestions on how to "regulate" a DIY CO2 reactor? Would a timer work on the powerhead, or would there be too much gas buildup inside the gravel tube?
I tried something similar with my powerhead and everytime the head sat idle, it would fill with Co2 and need a kick start to get it going again. I've just got the mix down to a science now while I wait for my regulator to get here!
try this idea,
With a timer on the powerhead run a tube from the output nozzel to the entrance of the tube so as gas is above the motor, this will allow the motor to be in water while the gas is trapped above. The only bad thig about this that it might push out some of the gas in the morning as it starts back up.
If your pH doesn't drop rapidly try leaving the CO2 on 24-7. Keep an eye on it. I suspect you may not be generating, dissolving and retaining enough CO2 to worry about gassing your fish.
