You have to remember that your bacteria won't outgrow the need for it. No matter how much surface area you have. If you have more surface area than needed, your bacteria will spread thin across the whole of the surface area. If your bacteria is too thin it is more susceptible to a total die off from exposure to certain chemicals like potassium permanganate etc, as well as exposure to low oxygen from turning pump off for whatever reason and ph swings.
Another thing with this stuff is it needs an extreme pre-filter. Also it seems to perform best in a wet /dry system.
I have this stuff in all my filters. Four fluval fx5s, two fluval fx6s and two cubic feet of it in a shower filter for my pond. The stuff is amazing, but needs to be handled and used properly.
