An update: This little tank was doing great; the plants and blue velvets were thriving. Even had a berried girl. And then I learned the hard way just how quickly the params can change in a gallon of water. I added a couple lily bulbs to the tank and within minutes the shrimp were flying frantically around the tank. The bulbs, which had been in quarantine prior to introducing them to the tank, took out the entire colony.
Despite that setback and disappointment, the experience left me hooked on shrimp. So I moved all the plants to a 3 gallon I was going to toss. Added a few more plants and some ghosties to keep things in check until it's matured. The filter is ugly!! But should disappear behind the plants as they grow in. Here's the results:
