If you have any bodies of water near you, I'd go out for a hike and see what you can turn up.
Otherwise, you might want to take a look at manzanita branches, I believe they are used in floral arrangements and weddings and such, and a lot of them look pretty good, if you turned it upside down, it would probably pass for roots (especially if you cut all of the branches level, and put them in the substrate)
