I may have gotten lucky in my case but I have a Hydor inline heater in my 55g turtle tank. A couple of times my XP3 filter became clogged for maybe a week with the hydor still running.
Luckily, I shut everything down to clean out the tubing and restarted everything with no ill effects. Not sure if the cutoff took effect or it had sufficient time to cool as I removed the obstruction.
