Low tech seems to be easier, safer - with less problematic water conditions risk, less worrisome, lower maintenance & less lighting need, lesser cost, easier to live with & enjoy.
The flip side is hi-tech generally produces quicker & much better results, with less potential algae problems, and usually a much better- looking, professional tank.
Take your pick.
I've tried both, and I'll go with low tech for less concern & headaches, overall - but it's definitely a matter of preference & your own individual experience with it.
