I have something similar in my tank. It took two weeks or more to sink because I didn't boil it...It grew this nasty looking white gooey algae looking snot that had to be scrubbed off once and then it's gone. Not sure what it is but the sales guy told me to expect it. It looks awesome in my tank and the fish love the knotty roots to hide in.
