Definitely worth wiping your plants off as often as you have to. I'm having an outbreak and have been cleaning off my plants about every 3 to 4 days. I could get away with a weekly cleaning, but choose to stay on top of it as much as possible. I just recently picked up a few Nerite snails and they are kicking butt and helping me keep it under control.
I use a length of airline tubing to make sure I suck up as much of the diatoms and brown algae I can when doing my cleaning.
