You're thinking of a y-valve or something, which go for like 54c. The concept you've described, the path of least resistance, follows for those things (b/c they are literally things that allow simple, unregulated branching of tubing), but this splitter is 54$ because it can evenly split gas regardless of [reasonable] pressure differentiation because of the nv.
