VIPets in Cutlerville still has more stock than the big chain stores, hands down. I've never had a problem with fish from there, and that's what I buy from them.
Most beginners have problems with their fish, because they have no clue about water quality, or that test strips expire in 6 months, and drop tests give more accurate readings because the chemicals last for 4-5 years once opened.
