Sunsuns (and the many rebrands they use) are pretty great. Very cheap and works well. Its too bad most of them are higher flow so they don't compete against eheim for smaller nano tanks.

Elodea is the most commonly used aquatic plant for college biology labs. Very easy to keep. You can just through it in a beaker with some pond water, place it near a window and it will grow.
