Pic 1 is the better of the 3 IMO. You can always cut it up and position the branches how you want if your feeling restricted. 2nd piece is cool but too bulky, 3rd doesn't even look like wood to me.

I had the same problem, my shrimp tank is in my bedroom too. The trickling water from the sponge filter drove me nuts. Needless to say I switched to a canister with sponge intake :P ahhh silence

I see nothing wrong with providing an optimal PH for bacterial growth by adding some KH to the RO water. Or use your tap water for the cycle which for most of us contains at least some KH already.
