Go for the 2x40. IMHO 40watt over a 10gl is barely hit high light. I personally use 4x ODNO 2 bulbs in series. It's a lot brighter than 2x36 watt fixture.

That's far from high light tank. Consider power compact or overdriving those NO bulbs to get high light tank. Right now, with 3x36 on a 55gl, you'll have a medium light tank.
