I really don't think it's the substrate. I actually have exactly the same, sterbais on eco-complete. I've got 18 cories and not one has any problems. My money would be on water quality.

I keep mine in those 5 gallon drinking water jugs. Let's me move it into a closet if I make it a week ahead of time and don't want it in the rubbermaid sitting by the tank for that long.

Not quite the same thing but you could always attach the moss ball to a suction cup and put that midway up the tank. You should be able to set it up so you can barely see the suction cup.
