Wow. My two plants are 6-8 inches tall, so they are too short to plant directly in the substrate, which is why they are going to grow in the filter until they are tall enough.

Could you use the 29 as a sump for the 55? If you put a piece of oriented strand board on the bottom of the stand you could place the 29 on the bottom part of the stand.

P.S. I have a 29 gallon...
