Id say about a month or two. Just put them into the tank and the color will eventually go away with the periodic water changes. It wont hurt anything in the tank.

Great Idea...I've done it myself. Works well to control algae - though I have heard that it does melt vals, as Sharkfood has said...no personal experience with that problem though.

Word! I've kept 4 ten gallon tanks and high light plants did not begin to grow right until I dropped an 80w light over top. You need light for a 10 Gal to grow well.
