Depends on your alkalinity. Alkalinity reduces the drop in pH when CO2 is added. If alkalinity is low, then you have to set your pH lower than if your alkalinity is high.

That's cool, I've never seen a crystal that big in lava rock. All the ones in Hawaii are packed with tons of little green olivine crystals, but I've never seen any big ones.

Have you tried Oolite sand from a saltwater fish store, or other saltwater sand. I'm not sure of the technical difference, but it's still calcium carbonate based.
