I've had setups like this one before. As soon as you start falling behind on dosing Excel everythin starts falling apart. I'd go with less light if possible. T5HOs are intense.

In that case, maybe Hygro pinnatifida could be a good option. It does attach to rock/wood if you tie it well. Anubias and Bucephalandra are other epiphytes as well.

Because with planted tanks I can leave my tanks alone for weeks and have things be fine. Can't do that with a reef tank.

I have one zebra nerite that I bought back in...

I have one zebra nerite that I bought back in summer of 2008. It's lived in hard water for most his life but I recently transferred it to a soft water tank and it seems to be doing just fine.

Sorry, I should have been clearer in my earlier post. The damaged shell itself does not heal, but the snail grows new shell which eventually replaces the old stuff.
