I just sprinkle it in (4 teaspoons) as I fill from the water change. A lot of it doesn't dissolve right away but is gone the next day. It won't hurt the fish in any way.

After all that we have in these tanks $wise the cost of Excel is a pretty minor outlay. Excel is wonderful for low tech tanks and worth every penny.
