The bag would fill with CO2 rather quickly and you'd rebreathe the CO2 causing your body to hyperventilate filling the bag with even more CO2 and you would pass out and die probably shortly after.

Crushed gravel definitely isn't the best option. I'd go with something like zeolight, matrix, biomax rings, really small crushed lava rock, or even fill it with more sponge.

Yes in that they provide a good place for biofilm. But I think IAL have a little extra going for them. But for the price difference (free vs. paying for them)...I'll use oak leaves in my tanks...

Cholla wood not at all. Leaves...I've used dried oak leaves in my tank before and they didn't stain the water either. Not sure about IAL's though.

I was doing roughly 1bps and had neos and they were just fine. pH would be around 6.5ish when lights were on and CO2 off at night and pH would raise to 7.6. No issues.

Some people keep the various neo varieties but I found that they don't like lower pH...at least in my experience. They lived just fine but no breeding if that's a concern for you.
