Its a matter of opinion. I actually keep it in every single tank I have and really enjoy it. It helps suck up excess nutrients. It does grow like crazy, I usually scoop about half of it out once ever...

The awesome thing about these bowls is that you can always just empty it, and redo it until you get the perfect results.
I redid mine 4 times before I finally used a very small gravel versus sand....

Honestly... they *should* be on timers...but pretty much they are on from about 7:15am (when I wake up) till about 8pm every day.
I don't have any major algae issues, water is extremely stable, so...
