To hide the front edge, I would apply a piece of static cling black plastic or similar, cut to cover from the outer edge of the tank to the visible silicone line.

How much did the endcaps run you? I priced some out this morning at Rona and they were over $6 per each end (>$12 to run one light). Seemed awfully steep to me as I am thinking of adding 4 bulbs.

You might try introducing a piece of PVC pipe, open both ends. If the pleco moves into the pipe, place a hand over each end of the pipe while the fish is inside, lift and move fish with pipe.
