T5s last a good while. Some people run them until they burn out without problems. And catalinaaquarium.com has a nice 3 bulb T5HO fixture for $149, that may be a nice fit for a 55G. But I'm not sure...

Have you thought about dosing the PPS PRO method, 1 ml doses 10 gallons. If you reduce the quantities by half each 1 ml would dose 5 gallons.

I use a dropper. Since there are about 20 drops in 1ml, 10 drops would be good for 5 gallons, and 5 drops for a 2.5G tank. I usually dose triple the recommended amount, 15 drops, in my 2.5 daily....

A 20H with the nova extreme will give you 2.4 WPG. You would be able to grow a lot more than just low light plants. I started with the same set up on 7-15, no CO2, dosing 2ml of Excel daily and ferts...
