Thanks for the input Tom. I have addressed the CO2 levels and increased flow around the tank. I'm starting to get a real grasp on growing plants in a high tech environment; it's only taken 5 years :D

Forget about light intensity, concentrate on CO2 levels. Light levels grow algae without proper CO2 and flow.

Big help, thankyou. It describes the methylated spirits as "industrial", which after a quick google scan, means 5% of the overall alcohol content is methanol. How that effects things, I don't know.

Phosphate removers will strip silicates from the water. They will, however, strip the phosphates too. I suppose this could be regulated with fertiliser.
