What is the likelyhood of aquatic snails surviving in the septic tank? There could be some aerobic and anarobic zones that might accomidate them. I know they would not be harmful, maybe even helpful....

The old filter pad will work in either application. There are also beneficial bacteria available at the LFS either liquid or powder. An established tank should already have plenty of micro-bio in it
