I had a tank with the same height. I did the dirted tank and used fluorite. I had a heck of a time battling algae. Finally got it after a while and it looked spectacular but it took a while.

I use the MGOPS and have no issues. I never make it to the full inch of MGOPS though. I use about 1/2 to 3/4 and plant very heavy at the onset. I will tell you I rarely move around my hardscape though

+1 I never did the carbon but I did do the Purigen. Works like a charm and is easily recharged. Has been about 18 months and just now there is no more leeching.
