Yes, it does affect cycling. The glut in excel is used to disinfect medical equipments. It kills bacteria and such. So it will kill your beneficial bacteria.

I'm thinking of getting out of the co2 business actually. I have low tech tanks that are lush and wonder in a 20# tank is worth it.

I'd turn off the co2 and leave the lights off until the treatment is done. The plants will survive without light for a while.

Any wood is fine really, as long as it looks good and have been dead for a while. I'd stay away from redwood cedar since it's known to have anti rotting properties.

Actually, wild betta splendens are equally if not more aggressive. People would catch them out of the rice paddies and let them fight and then return them back. The breeding was for look and size....
