They won't spread out. I usually push them as deep as possible directly under the plant. If its a group of plants I'll stick them in between the plants.

The first picture is the dreaded thread algae uhg. Second picture is hard to make out. The only way I've been able to rid a tank of thread algae is to block and/or lower light intensity.

Couple things: Yes your tank is still cycling, nitrites over 5ppm suggests your near the end of your cycle. The substrate is removing the carbonate hardness (KH) as a result the PH will also drop....

As long as you have cycled media it will be fine. I've kept fish in a 5 gallon bucket for a couple weeks while redoing their tank. Usually I reduce feeding so there is less ammonia production.

Sounds right. The plants you bought seeded the tank with bacteria. You don't need to add that much ammonia though, 2-3ppm will do. Take your time and let the bacteria spread.
