electric blue crayfish question

My crayfish molted 4 days ago and his old shell is still in there. i know they eat their shells for the nutrients, but how long should i leave it in there? will it foul the water?

I've got pogostemon erectus doing surprisingly well in under 2 wpg. Rotala macandra and jungle vals also do well for me. Swords, mariselea minuta, ludwigia, and most crypts do well too.
