I did somethibg similar with my DIY set up prior to going over to a pressurised system. It worked just fine, the sponge traps loads of the CO2 and keeps it submerged for a long time, giving it time...

This is a good sign, it means that the plants are photosynthesising rapidly, i.e you have a good amount of light, nutrients and CO2 available to them. You should see rapid and lush growth as a result

my neon tetra suddenly has this strange white growth / parasite. I dont think it's white spot as it purtrudes quite some was as if its some sort of parasite. nothing else in the tank shows...
