I used the top one. It seems to be working well I capped it with small rocks but it has mixed up alot. Mine gave off some small amounts of ammonia but the addition of plants killed that.

I agree my goldfish are hard on plants except java fern and corkscrew val, but each fish is a little different I have people tell me all the time their vals get eaten.
