Do sump pumps such as Pondmaster need to be upright? Or would it be fine if it was sitting on its side so the return tube was pointing up instead of out the side? Any experiences with this?

Sand is a fine cap, but it doesn't have the CEC to absorb some of the excess nutrients from the soil. It would work without that, but it might just take longer for the ammonia/nitrates to go down...

I've used compost before and it turned out fine. You just have to careful because it is so rich... so make sure to not use too much and mix it with a lot of clay or something.

I'm wondering if the green water is acting as a sort of algae scrubber and that's why your nitrates are 0... might be something to keep an eye on if you get rid of it with a UV or anything.
